The Orphan and the Outcast
A Tale of Courage, Sacrifice, and Finding a Place to Belong
By J. C. Freeland
Kael is twelve years old, alone, wounded, and running for her life.
After a devastating attack destroys everything she has known, Kael finds herself wandering through a dangerous wilderness with nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Then, on a lonely road, she encounters Blaznek, a dwarf warrior whose own life has left him isolated and uncertain of where he belongs.
Blaznek offers Kael something she desperately needs: safety.
But safety doesn’t last long.
When three seemingly friendly travelers cross their path, Blaznek’s suspicions prove well-founded. Kael is taken, and Blaznek faces an agonizing choice: continue the journey he had planned—or risk everything to rescue a little girl who has become far more important to him than he ever expected.
Their journey will take them from the welcoming village of Ashenford to the dark reaches surrounding Blackglass Fortress. Along the way, Kael and Blaznek discover that family isn’t always defined by blood, that courage isn’t the absence of fear, and that sometimes the greatest acts of love require the greatest sacrifices.
A prequel featuring two characters from The Epic Adventures of Josiah Harper, The Orphan and the Outcast is a standalone Tale of Zorkon, filled with adventure, danger, humor, heart, and the enduring struggle between light and darkness.
